#233: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending May 23.
|
Plastic toy drama. Hi, Chris here with issue #233 of Switch Weekly. I’ve got all the Nintendo stuff worth seeing from the last seven days. Let’s get started. Skyward Sword is coming to Switch in July, and as such we’re getting a new Amiibo to go along with the release. The Zelda and Loftwing figurine does look awesome …however, anyone who spends to much time on Twitter ( hi ) will know that the fact this toy does something in-game has seemingly upset a lot of folks who see it as gating content behind another purchase. For those unaware, this $25 Amiibo will enable fast-travel across the game overworld. Now, I don’t know enough about Skyward Sword to really judge how much of a quality of life improvement this is, but it seems to have irked enough folks to be notable. I’ll say this: the entire point of Amiibo is that they do something beyond just being a nice figure to look at, as for what that thing is, and how fair that is.. well I’ve linked to a few pieces which make an argument for each side of the story.
Moving on, next week sees nearly
40 games hitting the eShop
(
I make it 38 games in total
), so yeah, crazy busy week with a fair few worth taking a good look at. Full list below of course.
🎮 Currently Playing — Yoshi’s Island 2 REVIEW Miitopia — I didn’t play the 3DS version of this, and this review didn’t really sell me on the Switch version. Alex says that although filled with ” light-hearted and wholesome humour “, it’s somewhat monotonous throughout. Your mileage may vary of course, as Alex also notes you pretty much get as much out of this as you put in. I’ll say this though: the character creation tools are rad. Alex Olney // Nintendo Life REVIEW Knockout City: EA’s dodgeball game is worth a throw — Rob explains that this battle royal experience does a lot right: ” it’s joyous to try and overcome your enemies with a well-timed dodge, catch or throw, and the brilliance of that core mechanic could carry this game a long way. “. Here’s another review from Nintendo Enthusiast. This tweet said it’s like if Splatoon, Jet Set Radio, and Fornite had a baby…which is kinda intriguing. Rob Leane // Radio Times REVIEW Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster — ” As true in 2021 as it was in 2003, Shin Megami Tensei III is nothing short of a must-play RPG ” . Renan Fontes // Cubed 3 REVIEW Aerial_Knight’s Never Yield — ” very obviously a passion project that’s had a ton of love poured into its super stylish aesthetics and excellent soundtrack, however, it’s also one that’s rather sorely lacking in the gameplay department ” . PJ O’Reilly // Nintendo Life It’s time for Nintendo to make amiibo fun again Chris Scullion // VGC Why Nintendo locking Skyward Sword improvements behind Amiibo is bad Austin King // ScreenRant INTERVIEW Crash Bandicoot 4 creative producer on how the game came to be Nintendo Everything ICYMI Back with another Nintendo-themed crossword Chris Brandrick // Switch Weekly
