#128: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending April 28th.
|
No baby.
Hi, issue #128 of Switch Weekly here, with this week’s digest of Nintendo news. Nintendo shared their quarterly results this week, and you can see the PDF with all the details here . The key takeaways:
Anyway, if you opened last week’s issue you’ll know I’m expecting the birth of my son any day now — I wasn’t sure if I’d get to publish this week, but here I am. Still no sign of the little guy! 😅 In other news…I finally got chance to start the Labo VR kit , and the updates for both Mario and Zelda are out now – there seems to be mixed opinions around that and I’ve linked a few below. Oh, I meant to mention this last week, but a remaster of XIII has been announced , and it’s coming to the Switch later this year (November). I played the original back in 2003 on the GameCube, and had a good time with it. It’s a shooter with a unique cel-shaded ‘comic-book’ style. Hopefully this remaster makes it worth revisiting. All the usual good stuff is below — if you’ve any feedback about this issue, why not drop me a tweet . 🙂

REVIEW SteamWorld Quest – indie’s mechanical masters triumph with yet another genre — The latest from Image & Form games delivers ” Wit, warmth, smart mechanics and a surprising challenge “, all of which make ” SteamWorld Quest a delight ” . Christian Donlan // Eurogamer SteamWorld continues its risky tradition with Quest — Brjann Sigurgeirsson, the CEO of Image & Form, explains here to Polygon how the studio goes about experimenting with differing genres. Russ Frushtick // Polygon REVIEW Mortal Kombat 11 — This marks the return of the Mortal Kombat series to a Nintendo console. The last time this brutal fighter graced a Nintendo machine was back in 2007 on the Wii. Anyway, history aside, this seems to be a pretty solid port of the latest entry. ( Confession: I’ve never really been into this series. Yeah, I know ). Seth Cano // Pure Nintendo From handheld to 4K: Mortal Kombat 11 delivers on all consoles — ” for the most part, MK11 on Switch does deliver that essential 60 frames per second action” . Thomas Morgan // Digital Foundry – Eurogamer Breath of the Wild in VR is an ugly, uncomfortable experience — It’s a free update for a cardboard pair of goggles, so the bar wasn’t very high. As such, it’s no surprise the author ” came away very disappointed with the experience” . He’s not the only one . Andrew Webster // The Verge Nintendo Switch Online at 9.8 million accounts — …and I’ve no doubt that the ‘free for subscribers’ hit Tetris 99 helped it reach that figure. Liz Lanier // Variety Nintendo confirms partnership with Tencent to bring Switch to China — This was confirmed this week. No dates on when just yet though . A.K. Rahming // Nintendo Enthusiast
