Your Nintendo digest for the week ending June 2.

Prepare for Pokemon.
Hi, issue #132 of Switch Weekly here, with your round-up of this week’s Nintendo news. We’ve got a Pokemon Direct coming in just a few days — the presentation is expected to last around 15-minutes and will focus on the upcoming Sword and Shield games. Good to see Nintendo are getting Pokemon news out there before E3. Being the optimist I am, I see it as freeing up time for unknown surprises. 😅 Previews for Super Mario Maker 2 ( launching later this month ) have arrived, and it seems sure that the game will be a hit, with plenty of new worthwhile additions. However, the positive impressions have been somewhat overshadowed by the inability to play with friends online – something that came to light this week . More on all that below.
Thanks for reading. Catch you next week,
PREVIEW Breaking the rules of Mario: Why Mario Maker 2 could be the plumber’s most surprising 2D game yet — “Super Mario Maker 2 is a level creation package with a far deeper selection of tools than its predecessor, but the sequel’s biggest surprise is that it looks set to offer a similarly imaginative and well-stocked experience for those planning to play, rather than just create.” Here’s a couple of other previews from Engadget and Kotaku UK . Andy Robinson // VGC Online play in Super Mario Maker 2 limited to randoms only — Well, there had to be something right. Neal Ronaghan, reporting for Nintendo World Report, was told at a recent Mario Maker 2 preview event that the online mode in the upcoming game would be limited – you can’t play online with friends. I tweeted my dissapointment at this move, and was admittedly a little sceptical at first ( probably more just hoping it wasn’t the case ). This scepticism came about due to reps often being contract workers, however Neal updated the story to clarify it was an official Nintendo Treehouse employee who made the remarks. Nintendo PR have since confirmed this lack of online is the case. 🤷♂️ Neal Ronaghan // Nintendo World Report The changing definition of ‘The Nintendo Difference’ — Following word that Mario Maker 2’s online will be limited, here’s an overall critique of how Nintendo’s often unconventional thinking sometimes sends the company backwards. Gavin Lane // Nintendo Life Take a look inside The Art of Super Mario Odyssey — This art book, filled with concept art from the last Mario adventure, originally released in Japan back in 2018, but is now getting a localisation for the US. It’s due out in October and is up for preorder now: US preorder page | UK preorder page . Michael McWhertor // Polygon Pokémon Direct announced for June 5th, 2019 Seth Cano // Pure Nintendo Cadence of Hyrule confirmed for June, new gameplay footage shown Jack Parsons // Loot Pots A Detective Pikachu game is coming to Switch Imran Khan // Game Informer
