#166: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending February 2.
|
Kickstarting Wonder.
Hey , issue #166 of Switch Weekly here, with the Nintendo links you need to see. Nintendo recently shared some financial results, and here’s a few highlights: the Switch has now sold more than 52 million units, meaning it has now sold more than the SNES , that Mario Kart 8 port has sold in excess of 20 million copies on the Switch, and Smash Bros Ultimate isn’t to far off reaching 20 million either. The Switch Online service now has more than 15 million paying members. Pokemon Sword and Shield, which have only been out for the best part of two months, has nearly outsold Breath of the Wild. Ok, info dump done. But yeah, the Switch is doing alright. Another review from me this week: It’s Panic Barn’s bouncer management sim ‘Not Tonight’ . It’s Brexit meets Papers, Please . Another 25 games hitting the eShop next week, full list in the issue below. Thanks for reading, and have a great week.
Cheers,
Nintendo’s special ‘Animal Crossing’ Switch is coming — A new cutesy hardware bundle is coming in time for New Horizons, complete with pastel Joy-Con’s and a special dock with Nook on it, so you can never forget your island debts . Richard Lawler // Engadget Just one Animal Crossing: New Horizons island per Switch, Nintendo confirms — A little bit of forced cohesion from Nintendo here, as if you have multiple people in your house wanting to play New Horizons, you’ll all have to just get along and live on the same island. This is a mild PITA for some I imagine. Wesley Yin-Poole // Eurogamer PlatinumGames on Kickstarter — Not much to see here at time of writing, but it appears that PlatinumGames may end up running a Kickstarter in order to publish that long-rumoured Wonderful 101 port. Apparently Nintendo, and others, weren’t interested . This video from GameXplain has more . As an aside: this is a fine way to gauge interest, but an odd approach for a company who have just received investment from mega-corp Tencent. PlatinumGames // Kickstarter ‘No plans’ to release a new Switch model in 2020, says Nintendo — No Pro anytime soon. But hey, they would say that, right? Andy Robinson // VGC REVIEW Not Tonight: Take Back Control Edition — My review of this post-Brexit bouncer-management sim. If you enjoyed Papers, Please then you’ll find this has similar appeal. “a grim take on the Brexit timeline, and one I hope is by no means a looming reality”. Chris Brandrick // Switch Weekly REVIEW Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition – A masterful narrative adventure — Said to be ” a fascinating story filled with intrigue, metaphor, and mystery ” that’s ” a weird and wonderful example of what can be done with the medium “. High praise from the author, as he ends by encouraging ” absolutely everyone to play it “. Dave Aubrey // WCCF Tech REVIEW Aviary Attorney — No objections to the gorgeous art style in this one. S Simpson // The Switch Island ℹ️ Enjoying the newsletter? Support it on Patreon . The future of Splatoon – Is this what’s next? — Could a Fortnite-style free-to-play model work for the next Splatoon? Laurie E // The Switch Island The Outer Worlds is coming to Switch in March Chris Carter // Destructoid Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 ‘won’t release in 2020’, insider claims Andy Robinson // VGC Switch’s success vindicates Nintendo’s new hardware approach, but does it have legs? Gavin Lane // Nintendo Life Persona 5 Scramble dev says the story can still be enjoyed without having played Persona 5 Nintendo Everything Media Molecule veterans on bringing co-op coming-of-age adventure knights & bikes to Switch Gavin Lane // Nintendo Life
