#206: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending November 8.
|
Watch out Wii.
Hi, issue #206 of Switch Weekly here with your Nintendo update.
This week Nintendo shared updated sales figures, and the Switch has now overtaken the NES, with 68 million units sold to date. Oh, and Animal Crossing is closing in 30 million units, which is an
insane
attach rate. I put together
a little post with some highlights here
, and I’ve linked some more analysis in the issue below.
Mario’s makers speak on his 35th anniversary for Nintendo — If you’ve only got time to read one thing from this week’s issue – make it this one. Gene Park // Launcher (The Washington Post) Nintendo’s latest results reveal huge Animal Crossing sales, as Switch hardware approaches 70m Andy Robinson // VGC Nintendo will stop selling multiple games in March 2021. But why? — Patrick spoke to several devs and analysts to get their take on Nintendo’s recent ‘limited time only’ practices. Beyond them just testing different market approaches the cynical take here ( to juice sales ) is probably the right one. Patrick Klepek // Vice REVIEW Control Ultimate Edition – Cloud Version — ” Control is, and always has been, a fantastic game ” however Kate explains that the ” Switch may not be the absolute best place to play […], but it’s perfectly good if you’ve got a relatively stable internet connection and a Pro Controller “. Kate Gray // Nintendo Life REVIEW Jurassic World Evolution: Complete Edition — For dino park building on the go this version seems more than up to the task. There’s a decent video review from RGT 85 if you’d rather see it in action. Nicola Ardron // God is a Geek Hori releasing accessible ‘Flex Controller’ for Switch Bryan Finch // Nintendo Wire Nintendo Switch gaining ground in China as console demand grows — Turns out the Switch is doing quite well in China. Dean Takahashi // VentureBeat REVIEW Descenders — ” a top tier extreme sports game, translating the feeling of riding a bike down a hill with incredible precision. So many small design details pull the package together to provide a wonderfully kinetic experience. “. Chris Lawn // Vooks REVIEW No More Heroes 1 & 2 Review — These indie-punk cult classics find a new home on Switch, complete with their ” unapologetically abrasive action “. The review concludes that although a product of their time, they remain an ” intoxicating guilty pleasure “. Alan Wen // NME REVIEW Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia — Considering Nintendo made a fair bit of noise about this one it’s somewhat surprising to see it review pretty badly across the board: ” shows a distinct lack of passion not just from its poorly thought out gameplay and shoddily thrown together story, but also through its astounding lack of polish “. Matthew Zawodniak // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Tropico 6 — Shows that ” games of this scope have a place in the portable realm. “. Thomas Haroldsen // Nintendad How a visually impaired streamer hunts shiny Pokemon — This is a good read about playing Pokemon when blind, but goes on to talk about Nintendo’s somewhat disappointing accessibility approach as a whole. Ben Sledge // Eurogamer 20 years ago, Paper Mario made the Mushroom Kingdom feel like a real place — ” In the years since, Nintendo’s RPG series has drifted further and further away from what made it so interesting in the first place “. Andy McDonald // Vice It’s about time games like Genshin Impact started cribbing from BotW Marty Sliva // Escapist Magazine How the Switch eShop is pushing publishers to ‘game the system’ Gavin Lane // Nintendo Life ▶ Building the ultimate Breath of the Wild playhouse — This DIY video is well worth a watch – the end result is awesome, and filled with lots of really neat BotW details. Once Upon A Workbench // YouTube 50 Journalists covering Nintendo — If you missed this, I launched a page bringing together 50 writers in the Nintendo space. Chris Brandrick // Switch Weekly
