#254: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending October 24.
|
That’s a lot of email. Hello, here’s issue # 254 of Switch Weekly, with your Nintendo update. Before we get into this week’s news, I’d like to start by talking about this newsletter . As of this issue, Switch Weekly is now five years old . Yep, half a decade ago I was sat at work watching the initial reveal trailer for what we all now know as the Nintendo Switch. I quickly bought the domain, slapped a site together, and started asking folks to sign up for my new little newsletter experiment. A few days later I sent issue #1 to just over a dozen people ( I’d love to know if you’re still here ). Thankfully I send these weekly updates to just a few more of you now (over 8,000 this week). It’s been real fun to go back and look at the archives and see what we all thought of the NX/Switch before it was in our hands. Thank you so much for reading over the past five years — I really do hope this is one of the few emails you actually look forward to opening in your inbox . ❤️ ℹ️ Enjoy Switch Weekly? You can become a patron , or buy Chris a coffee to show your support . To celebrate five years of Switch Weekly, the lovely team behind the excellent platform adventure game Horace have given me a copy of the game to giveaway . You can read a review of this gem right here , and you can follow them on Twitter too. [WEB VERSION] — To win you needed to be an email subscriber. I have a brand new Nintendo-themed crossword puzzle for you to solve . I love putting these together, so please reply if you do give it a go and let me know how you found it — your feedback is handy, and lets me know whether to keep making them. Oh, and please do share them with any Nintendo fans you know who may enjoy a challenge. Here’s a little tip: If you go to the ‘Reveal’ menu and tap ‘Show a hint’ you’ll get another clue to help you out .
Finally, we’ve got another big list of games hitting the Switch next week, with over
30 titles
on the way — including Mario Party and Voice of Cards. The full list is below.
🎮 Currently Playing — Metroid Dread Five years on from the frenzy of ‘NX’ becoming the Switch Thomas Whitehead // Nintendo Life Nintendo delays its Advance Wars remaster to spring 2022 Jay Peters // The Verge ▶ Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Trailer — GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas arrive on Switch on November 11. The Switch version features specific controls including Gyro aiming, as well as touch screen camera zooming, pans, and menu selections. I’m in for GTA III alone, it’s one of my all time faves. Rockstar Games // YouTube REVIEW Dying Light Platinum Edition — This first-person platformer/brawler gets ” a strong recommendation ” here, described as ” quite a remarkable achievement “. Note: It’s currently banned in Germany though… Mitch Vogel // Nintendo Life No More Heroes studio Grasshopper has been acquired by Chinese publisher NetEase Chris Scullion // VGC A clouded future: The problem of streaming games on Switch Jordan Rudek // Nintendo World Report Switch OLED durability test rates its screen 2/10 for scratch protection Andy Robinson // VGC REVIEW JARS — A Tim Burton-esque ” superbly quirky 2D tower defence game that is unfortunately hindered by a clunky menu system and infrequent difficulty spikes ” . Alex Harding // Switchaboo REVIEW Evertried — This roguelite is half puzzler, half tactics, and seemingly ” almost faultless in what it attempts to achieve ” . This review from Mitch Vogel at Nintendo Life also had plenty of praise. Ted Hazell // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Crysis Remastered Trilogy — This trio of once benchmark-setting FPS come to Switch: ” a fantastic set of ports that deliver the full-fat super soldier experience with very little in the way of stutters, bugs or other technical failings “. PJ O’Reilly // Nintendo Life REVIEW Gleylancer: Modern options elevate a classic Ashley Day // Games from the Black Hole REVIEW Unsighted Ted Hazell // Nintendo World Report The new OLED is great, but the Switch could do with more than a hardware refresh right now Martin Robinson // Eurogamer ▶ The Switch is the house of JRPGs Luiz Estrella // Nintendo Everything Switch Online Expansion Pack ‘lacks value’ compared to the competition Chirag Pattni // Nintendo Enthusiast Metroid Dread laid the groundwork for a perfect Metroid Fusion remake Francis Kenna // Nintendo Enthusiast Pokemon Unite is becoming disappointingly greedy Cian Maher // The Gamer Nintendo disrespects its own history by making it so hard to play — ” relies on nostalgia, but also takes steps to make its past hard to explore “. Grace Benfell // Gamespot Navigating the multi-Switch household: Or SWOLED makes three — …for those of you with multiple Switches at home . Jordan Rudek // Nintendo World Report Here’s a new Nintendo-themed crossword for you to try Chris Brandrick // Switch Weekly
