#222: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending March 7.
|
Apex dropping.
Hey, here’s issue #222 of Switch Weekly, with your update on all things Nintendo. The big news this week was more reporting on what’s next in terms of Switch hardware (the Switch ‘Pro’, if we must). This report ( linked below ) sounds about right to me — it’s just a question of timing. A late 2021 release of September onwards feels like a safe bet, but I agree with Daniel Ahmed in that Nintendo don’t really need to rush this out . Either way, exciting . This week we’ve got just over 15 games hitting the eShop , so a bit quieter than usual, highlights include Crash Bandicoot 4 and Apex Legends . The full list is below and you can always check out the ever excellent Switch Scores if you’re seeking out a new game to pick up. Finally, the State of Switch survey for 2021 has now closed , a big thank you to all of those who took part — this year saw over 11,500 responses. I’ll be busy over the next few days diving into the results and writing up my findings ( maybe buy me a coffee to keep me going? 😉). As ever, I’ll be sharing the results with you all first .
Anyway, that’s all from me, have a great week.
🎮 Currently Playing — F-Zero, Super Mario Bros. 35 Nintendo plans Switch model with bigger Samsung OLED display — Mochizuki’s reporting on this sorta thing is solid. This report suggests a 7-inch ‘rigid’ OLED screen with a 720p handheld resolution is on the way, with production starting in June. Here’s a mock-up of a 7-inch screen on the current model (which has a 6.2-inch screen). Oh, and if you’re worried about it only being 720p in handheld, this thread from Jeff Grubb should put your fears to rest. Takashi Mochizuki & Sohee Kim // Bloomberg Nintendo talks about the Switch’s lifespan Brian Ashcraft // Kotaku REVIEW Sea of Solitude: Director’s Cut — A ” one of a kind gem” that lets players ” step into a very intimate story [..] in such a stylish and emotionally resonant way “. Whereas Cameron Bald at Pocket Tactics found it to be a bit of a bore. Dave Trumbore // Collider ▶ Pokémon Legends could replace the mainline games — I had a similar thought to the one Phil shares here. Yes, I imagine the long-standing dual releases are an easy cash win for the Pokemon Company, but putting all their eggs in one basket has to be somewhat tempting. Nintendo Village // YouTube PopCap explains how it brought the Frostbite Engine to Switch: ‘At first it was a slideshow’ — Plants Vs Zombies: Battle for the Neighborville is the first Switch game to use EA’s engine. My thought is could this now mean we finally get a proper version of FIFA this year? We shall see. Anyway, I actually quite like the Plants vs Zombies shooters, so will probably be picking this up. Chris Scullion // VGC Returnal, Skyward Sword and the value of video games — Some folks ain’t happy about the $60 price for the Skyward Sword remaster. Here, Christopher looks into gaming pricing overall, and how value is one of perception, not just dollar amount. A good read that goes someway to explaining Nintendo’s position. Christopher Dring // gamesindustry ▶ Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – Mr. Sakurai presents “Pyra/Mythra” Nintendo // YouTube ▶ Crash Bandicoot 4: Switch vs PS4 Pro early graphics comparison Cycu1 // YouTube It’s March, and Nintendo is taking away your Mario games soon… Chris Brandrick // Digg REVIEW Everhood — ” Everhood’s unforgettable rhythm-based combat is among the freshest elements I’ve ever seen” . Here’s another review from Big Daddy Gaming . Jordan Rudek // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Lawnmower Game: Racing — This is described as ‘ one of the worst games on Switch ‘, and yes, Chris says it is worse than early Switch stinker Vroom in the Night Sky . Avoid this game at all costs, but give Chris’ entertaining review a read. 😅 Chris Scullion // Nintendo Life REVIEW Pako Caravan — This car-based evolution of mobile classic Snake may sound simple but ” is actually a fantastic and lovingly crafted game […] The very essence of ‘one more go’ gaming “. Greg Hicks // Finger Guns REVIEW 3 Out Of 10 — A ‘playable sitcom’ that mixes up genres and seems to have plenty of interesting ideas, but is a bit on the short side. Nathan P. Gibson // Screen Rant REVIEW Wind Peaks — This scavenger hunt adventure has appeal, but left the author wanting more due to its short play time. Trevor Gould // Pure Nintendo The Nintendo Switch was my companion as I travelled the World Kate Gray // Nintendo Life Testing Switch accessibility by introducing my mother to its video games Jaimie Ditchfield // Nintendo Enthusiast I used a strategy guide to beat ‘Breath of the Wild’ and I am not sorry Matt Goldberg // Collider ▶ The problem with Super Mario Odyssey Nintendrew // YouTube Why Zelda: Link’s Awakening is literally my dream game Stuart Gipp // Nintendo Life
