Nintendo’s financial results reveal Switch 2 hits 10 million units sold

Nintendo announced its latest financial results early Tuesday, sharing updated fiscal numbers for the first half of the financial year ending March 2026 (FY26), and painting a positive picture for the Switch 2’s opening months.

The company generated ¥1,099.5 billion during the first and second quarter of FY26, representing a huge year-over-year change of 110% when compared to the same period last year (FY25). This ¥1,099.5 billion in net sales translates to roughly $7.13 billion USD, €6.54 billion Euros, or £5.78 billion GBP.

This impressive year-over-year jump in sales can be attributed to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in June. The Switch 2 hardware, as of September 30th, has now reached total sales of 10.36 million — just behind the Wii U‘s 13.56 million total.

Switch 2 sales reached 10.36 million

As a result of hitting this 10 million sales milestone Nintendo has now adjusted its sales forecast for the hybrid sequel, bumping up expected sales for the rest of the financial year to 19 million, up from 15 million.

Now, although we can see notable growth in top line revenue, driven by the new hardware launch, Nintendo’s overall gross profit margin has declined — falling from 60.8% to 36.2% year-on-year, a drop of 24.6 percentage points. This profitability is being squeezed by a mix of things. We know the Switch 2 returns a lower profit margin for Nintendo than that achieved with the original hybrid. This, taken with other cost pressures such as tariffs and currency exchange impacts go some way to explain the drop.

The majority of Nintendo’s sales comes via its Switch and Switch 2 video game activity (hardware sales, game software, accessories such as Amiibo, and subscriptions like Nintendo Switch Online). This represents 97% of Nintendo’s income. The other three percent comes via ‘IP related income’, such as merchandise sales via its stores, smartphone app income, royalties, and visual media such as the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

We also saw updated sales figures for a range of Switch and Switch 2 software. Mario Kart World has sold 9.57 million units to date. Donkey Kong Bananza has sold 3.49 million units so far.

The original Nintendo Switch now stands at 154.01 million units sold, putting it just 10,000 units shy of overtaking the Nintendo DS, which sold a total of 154.02 million during its lifetime.
