#127: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending April 21st.

Tough mugs.
Hey, issue #127 of Switch Weekly here, with this week’s Nintendo news. Cuphead arrived on the Switch this week. I picked it up and instantly jumped in ( I’m loving it ) — it’s kept me from diving into Labo VR…which is quite something to leave on the backlog. 😅 The first paid DLC for Smash landed too, meaning Joker is now in the game. I’ve never played any of the Persona titles, but from what I hear Nintendo have gone above and beyond on this character, with lots of neat little touches that fans will appreciate. I’ve linked up the video announcing his arrival in the issue. Over 20 games are hitting the eShop next week — highlights include Picross S3, Mortal Kombat 11, SteamWorld Quest and more BoxBoy. Full list below! Now finally, some admin to be aware of: I’m expecting the birth of my son any day now , so consider this just a friendly note that next week the digest may take a break. I’ll no doubt post on Twitter with updates.
A big thanks for reading,
▶ Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – New Content Approaching — Persona’s Joker character is now available in Smash as the first paid DLC character. The game has also been upgraded with a free update, including a stage builder which has already resulted in some… interesting custom stages . Nintendo // YouTube REVIEW Katana Zero: a game about death, death, death, and life — This 2D side scroller offers gameplay that “is well-executed but can’t quite live up to the presentational highs” on offer. Yet the author concludes that overall it’s “a cynical and sometimes ugly story told with unusual warmth and sincerity” . Russ Frushtick // Polygon REVIEW Cuphead — I’ve been working my way through this over the past few days, and it’s worth every penny. Sure it’s tough, but its presentation and style are a sheer labour of love — “it’s easily one of the most visually jaw-dropping 2D platformers you’ll ever play” . Chris Scullion // Nintendo Life ▶ Cuphead Switch analysis: A flawless conversion? — “what is possibly the most faithful console conversion of a modern game we’ve seen yet” . Digital Foundry // YouTube Cuphead: The imperfections of a perfect port — Jon Irwin touches on how ports often vary from system-to-system and how debates surronding where the ‘best’ place to play a title may soon vanish due to increasingly faultless conversions. Jon Irwin // Variety PREVIEW SteamWorld Quest is a card game RPG as fiendish as it is lovely — This game is out next week, and despite being completely different to its fore-bearers, this preview claims it’s “not a surprise so much as an unexpected delight” . Joe Skrebels // IGN Unraveling the enigma of Nintendo’s Virtual Boy, 20 years later — Ok, so the Virtual Boy wasn’t strictly VR, but following Nintendo’s recent attempt at a VR ‘thing’ with Labo, this article from a few years ago makes for a fascinating read. It goes through the history behind the screen technology of the Virtual Boy and how the product came to be Benj Edwards // Fast Company
