James Bond in 007 First Light on Nintendo Switch 2

007 First Light is shaken, not shipped as Switch 2 version slips to 2027

If there is one thing Bond fans should be used to by now, it’s delays. Yep, 007 First Light for the Nintendo Switch 2 has unfortunately been delayed yet again, and will now launch in March of 2027.

The IO Interactive game first arrived on PC, Xbox and PS5 in May of this year, and the Switch 2 version was initially meant to launch day-and-date alongside other platforms. However, the version for Nintendo’s hybrid was delayed ahead of launch in April, with it being pushed out to a vague ‘summer’ slot.

As the summer rolled on, there was some speculation that the James Bond adventure would arrive in September — and I even expected it to get a release date mention in the latest Nintendo Direct presentation. The Direct sadly offered up no such date, instead the game was relegated to a scant mention during a sizzle reel section. This minimal showing wasn’t something that particularly inspired confidence in me that it would be arriving on Switch 2 anytime soon.

007 First Light getting a brief, undated sizzle reel mention in this Direct doesn’t bode well…

Now, IO Interactive have confirmed that the game won’t be coming to the Switch 2 this year. In a statement shared on X, the studio said:

Today we would like to provide an update on the Nintendo Switch 2 release of 007 First Light.

We know many of you have been looking forward to experiencing Bond’s reimagined origin story on Nintendo Switch 2, and we greatly appreciate your enthusiasm. To ensure we deliver the quality of experience players expect, we have made the decision to delay the release to March 2027, with the exact date to be communicated later. This additional time will go toward polishing the Nintendo Switch 2 performance of the game.

We were thrilled by the positive feedback on 007 First Light at gamescom, and it’s a great sign of the progress being made across the whole game as we head toward launch. The same demo will be playable at Tokyo Game Show this week, so please join us there if you would like a hands-on experience.

We will share further updates as soon as we are ready. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support.

It’s an unfortunate update really, as I was initially thrilled to see such a big third-party game get release date parity with other consoles, only for that to fall by the wayside. I’m a big Bond fan, but was waiting for the Switch 2 version as it’s my primary console (as you might expect).

Now the game will arrive on Switch 2 not only after the base game has seen DLC land on other platforms, but I’ve also spotted the game on sale elsewhere. Maybe the Switch 2 version will have that extra content bundled in?

Sadly it feels like any momentum the Switch 2 version had has dried up. I appreciate them wanting to get the release right, putting quality first, but it also feels a shame as to how this has all played out. I’d be curious to know what struggles they’ve faced in porting it and what the story is here.
