#167: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending February 9.
|
Wonder kickstarted.
Hey , issue #167 of Switch Weekly here, with all the Nintendo stuff you need to see from the past seven days. Yup, Wonderful 101 happened – in fact the announcement came the day after I published last week’s newsletter (Monday), so you may well already be aware. I’ve linked up a good interview with the studio and how it came to be in the issue below. Now, in an unrelated note, maybe I’m being cynical , but I’ve seen a ton of Twitter competitions pop up since the Animal Crossing Switch hardware bundle was revealed. Who are all these people with some three hundred dollars to blow on a random Twitter giveaway. Hmmmmm . 🤔 I’m gearing to launch this year’s State of Switch survey in the next week ( hopefully ), I’ll be sure to link it up in next week’s newsletter — but if you want to be early on the survey train then follow Switch Weekly on Twitter . It always does well on Reddit, so if you want magical internet points, it may be worth keeping an eye out for the karma. 😅 There’s just under 20 games on the eShop next week, all listed below for you to peruse. Thanks for reading. Catch you next time.
Cheers,
The Wonderful 101: Remastered smashes its $1.5 Million stretch goal — Well, as was suggested in last week’s issue , a Kickstarter for this Wii U game was seemingly on the cards — and true enough in the past seven days, the campaign was launched and all initial targets smashed. So yes, this game is finally coming to the Switch ( and Steam and the PS4 ). Have you backed it ? Liam Doolan // Nintendo Life INTERVIEW Platinum explains why it’s crowdfunding The Wonderful 101 — This is a great interview with Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya exploring the story behind Wonderful 101’s upcoming return. Andy Robinson // VGC Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a really confusing save backup system that ‘will be decided’ at a later date — What’s a Nintendo game launch without some weird online quirk, hey? Chris Carter // Destructoid Why big tech is betting big on gaming in 2020 — This isn’t a Nintendo focused piece, but I thought it to be an interesting overview of how the big tech players ( Apple, Amazon, Google, etc ) are looking at the gaming space with a renewed focus. Seth Schiesel // Protocol REVIEW Knights & Bikes — This co-op adventure looks ” gorgeous and unique “, whilst offering ” heartwarming and affecting storytelling “, but you may not want to play it solo. Neal Ronaghan // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Zero Zero Zero Zero — I like the look of this stripped down platformer. The reviewer claims it’s “certainly not a bad choice if you’re in for a fast-paced challenge”. Joshua Taylor // The Nintendo Village REVIEW The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics — ” doesn’t do nearly enough to stand out in a fairly busy genre ” Mick Fraser // God is a Geek REVIEW Speedrunners — ” provides the foundation for an excellent party game” but a lack of modes ” make this package feel like more of a mini-game “. Brett Posner-Ferdman // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Wide Ocean Big Jacket: A brief but moving game about getting away from it all Robert Purchese // Eurogamer ℹ️ Enjoying the newsletter? Support it on Patreon . Building the Nintendo Switch Pro — Sure, Nintendo have said new hardware isn’t happening any time soon, but this exploration of what the next machine maybe offers food for thought on a possible direction. James Burns // Super Jump Magazine It’s been nearly five years, so where in the world is Pikmin 4? — Picks apart a few popular theories of what became of the ‘next’ Pikmin game. Gavin Lane // Nintendo Life Who saved Rare? — Yep, it’s been an age since Rare and Nintendo were a ‘thing’, but the company has always been of interest to Nintendo fans. This article is an interesting look at how the UK-based studio has turned the page, moving on from the Kinect days. Christopher Dring // gamesindustry Murder By Numbers is Ace Attorney, Picross and thirsty anime all in one Joe Skrebels // IGN Luigi’s Mansion 3 developers on money, moral choices and Luigi’s approach to heroism Stephen Totilo // Kotaku
