#238: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending June 27.
|
After E3, we golf. Hi, issue #238 of Switch Weekly here, with your Nintendo update. Hope you’ve had a good week. Let’s get started. I picked up the new Mario Golf on Friday, and I’m a few hours into the single player. I’ve had fun with it, but also think it’s a bit rough around the edges. I really need to get my teeth into the online though, as that’s where I think I’ll get the most from it. More on this below.
Just like last week we’ve got just under
30 games hitting the Switch in the next seven days
, including Destroy All Humans, Sky, and Doki Doki Literature Club. Full list is below as ever.
🎮 Currently Playing — Mario Golf: Super Rush, Breath of the Wild REVIEW Mario Golf: Super Rush — A lot of the reviews for Mario Golf seem pretty midling, praising it for trying new things, but noting that those new additions don’t quite hit the mark. I’ve been playing it a bit this weekend and tend to agree — the ‘running to your ball’ mechanic feels a bit pointless in the single player adventure and a touch gimmicky overall. Anyway, Chris Scullion at VGC said it has ” solid foundations, but feels a bit safe “. I enjoyed Matt Birchler’s review too , so check that out. Chris Scullion // VGC ▶ What the critics think of Mario Golf: Super Rush — I go through a nearly half dozen Mario Golf reviews and pick out some choice quotes from each to get an idea of what the critical consensus is. Hit subscribe if you aren’t already — I’ve just hit the lowly goal of 200 subs and now I’m thirsty for more . 😅 Oh, I also wrote this up if you’d rather that. Switch Weekly // YouTube REVIEW Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 — Yep, we had to wait nearly a year for the remake of these arcade skaters to hit the Switch, but it sounds like we’ve ended up with a solid port. ” a great remake, made even better by being on the Switch “. It was a toss up between this and Mario Golf for me this week — I went for buying Super Rush, but this is very much on my wish list now, I loved this series during its heydey. Paul Roberts // Vooks ▶ Sharing my thoughts on Nintendo’s E3 Direct — I meant to include this last week, but the video was still processing on YouTube when it came time to hit send, so here it is now: Yep, it’s me just talking through my highlights from this year’s E3 presentation. Switch Weekly // YouTube Nintendo makes revisiting classic Metroid games a huge hassle Zack Zwiezen // Fanbyte REVIEW Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX — Much like the recent Wonder Boy release it seems this sticks to close to the ageing source material. This is described here as ” a wonderful-looking game held back by its developers clinging to the gameplay of the original Master System title. Some quality-of-life improvements could have saved it from mediocrity “. A shame really as I have fond memories of playing the original ( that ages me, huh ). Arthur Damian // Nintendo Enthusiast REVIEW Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny — This is out next week. ” a goofy and staggeringly intricate SRPG that will take hundreds of hours to see through to completion. However, this is easily the most streamlined and enjoyable entry in the series yet “. Mitch Vogel // Nintendo Life REVIEW LEGO Builder’s Journey — Not your usual LEGO game. It’s compared here to things like Captain Toad and Lemmings, and is ultimately described as a ” quietly beautiful adventure “. As such, it’s now on my watch list. John Rairdin // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Legend of Mana — ” colorful and charming, it’s a remake done right “. Seth Macy // IGN REVIEW Super Magbot — This ” platformer without a jump button [..] can be devilishly difficult yet oh so satisfying “. Sean Davies // Finger Guns REVIEW Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Alex Santa Maria // Screen Rant Nintendo to provide “significant financial support” to Forever Entertainment in new deal — They’re behind over 70 games on the Switch including Panzer Dragoon: Remake. Hat-tip to Pan Nindyk (who has a Polish Nintendo newsletter btw) for bringing this story to my attention . Daniel Vuckovic // Vooks PREVIEW OlliOlli World is reminding us what it’s like to be outside again Ana Diaz // Polygon INTERVIEW Monster Hunter Stories 2 puts characters first in more ways than one Steven Strom // Fanbyte Monster Hunter Rise director talks RE Engine on Switch Thomas Whitehead // Nintendo Life Splatoon 3: Five features we want in the sequel Abram Buehner // CBR Help Switch Weekly Hey, just a quick message to let you know that if you enjoy this newsletter you have the option to support it from just $1 a month.
