#250: Your Nintendo Update

Hi, Chris here with issue # 250 (250!) of Switch Weekly. Let’s jump in.

Yay, Nintendo Direct . If you missed it, you can catch up here . I’m going to run through some of my thoughts quickly now, so brain dump incoming:

• Mario Party Superstars having a minigames only mode is a win. Forget the boards, gimme those minigames.
• Not my bag, but nice to see more of the Age of Calamity DLC. Arrives late next month.
• That ChocoboGP Kart racer is Mario Kart with a Final Fantasy skin, even down to the pickups being question mark blocks ( subtle ). I mean if Nintendo ain’t gonna make more kart racing for us, then why not someone else. 🤷‍♂️
• On October 5th (soon) Sakurai will be revealing the final Smash fighter for Ultimate. No more DLC after this, that’s your lot. Let the man rest.
• A new Kirby game ( which is seemingly part Wall E, part Last of Us ) is arriving next spring. Funnily enough Nintendo had this one up on their site before the Direct. Oops.
• AC:NH fans are about to get a nice big update, as a special Animal Crossing Direct was announced for October. Yes, Nintendo announced a Direct in a Direct. 🤪
• There was an announcement for some Disney game that straight up confused me as the first 5 seconds of the trailer made me think Mickey was coming to Smash. 😅
• Triangle Strategy ( guess that’s the final name ) is dated: Febuary 2022.
• Big news this: Nintendo 64 games are coming to Switch Online ( with a catch ). I was firmly of the belief that Game Boy titles would come first, but alas not yet . The initial line up looks rather decent. It will cost extra though (as an oddly titled ‘Expansion Pack’ add-on to the standard NSO membership). To everyone’s surprise a handle of Sega Mega Drive / Genesis titles are also on the way.
• That long rumoured Castlevania Collection was finally made official.
• We got details on the Mario movie – it’s coming next year, and has a pretty wild voice cast. Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Jack Black as Boswer are excellent choices. Not too hot on Chris Pratt as the main man Mario though. We shall see .
• We got yet another look at Splatoon 3. I just love how committed the Squid Researcher is to the bit.
• The show ended with a look at Bayonetta 3 . Remember that? It was announced all the way back in 2017, which feels like a different age….. ⏳

Anyway, that’s what I considered to be the highlights. A pretty decent Direct I thought. 🙂

Next week there is a staggering amount of games coming to the Switch. I count around 40 games coming to Nintendo’s machine across the next seven days. The full list is below.

• DroneRidge — Fly your drone through 20 grungry atmospheric levels. (Sep 29 in U.S.)
• G-Darius HD — A high-res port of this 1997 arcade horizontal shoot’em up.
• Steel Assault — Post-apocalyptic America 2D retro action 16-bit style platformer.
• UnMetal — Action adventure with plenty of nods to Metal Gear Solid. M for Mature.
• 🎮 Warp Frontier — An Aussie 2D point and click adventure set in 2215.

Wednesday, September 29

• A Juggler’s Tale — A ‘cinematic’ string puppet/marionette puzzle platformer.
• Centipede: Recharged — A modern take on the classic bug blaster.
• Math Classroom Challenge — Maths in first person….
• Meteoroids 3D — A tribute to Asteroids.
• Mini Car Racing 2 — Basic racing around a giant household. (Sep 30 in U.S.)

Thursday, September 30

• Aeon Drive — Neon-coloured action platformer with a speedrunning twist. Looks alright.
• Asdivine Saga — Warring kingdom fantasy RPG.
• Astria Ascending — Described as a ‘mature, emotional JRPG’. Turn-based.
• Barricadez ReVisited — Adventure meets tower defense, with a crafting mechanic too.
• 🎮 Bonfire Peaks — Puzzle game about closure with voxel visuals.
• Colsword — Paint cubes in this logic puzzle game. (Oct 1 in U.S.)
• Cotton 2 – Saturn Tribute — ‘Witch girl shooting game’, now with online rankings.
• Cotton Boomerang – Saturn Tribute — As above, the 5th installment in this fantasy arcade title.
• 📦 Death’s Gambit: Afterlife — A hardcore 2D action-platformer / RPG.
• ExZeus: The Complete Collection — Mech robots in 3D arcade rail shooter alien invasion.
• Gearshifters — Top-down arcade racing rogue-lite shooter with tactical car loadouts.
• Guardian Force – Saturn Tribute — Cyber tank auto-scroll arcade shooter from 1998.
• Hot Wheels Unleashed — 3D racing with toy cars and crazy courses. Up to 12 players.
• Melty Blood: Type Lumina — 2D fighter based on a visual romance novel.
• Road Racing: Highway Car Chase — A hot pursuit if you will. 3D racer.
• Space Revenge — Top-down twin stick action exploration. The key art gives me Fox/Wolf vibes.
• Survival Z — 50 levels of arcade zombie clearning action.
• THE Card Battle: Eternal Destiny — Fantasy card game with over 600 to use.
• 🎮 Unsighted — Race against time RPG with conscious robots.

Friday, October 1

• 2weistein – The Curse of the Red Dragon 2 — Math lessons in a 3D action adventure.
• 📦 Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers — Kids racing for four players, based on the Nickelodeon show.
• Doom & Destiny Worlds — Nothing to do with DOOM . Open world island hopping turn-based RPG. You wake up with amnesia, so you have to piece things together. Up to four players local.
• FIFA 22 Legacy Edition — This is literally EA’s own copy describing the game: ” the same gameplay innovation from FIFA 21 without any new development or significant enhancements “. Compelling!
• Kyle is Famous: Complete Edition — Comedic text-based adventure with 117 endings.
• 📦 Mary Skelter Finale — The last in a trilogy. Dungeon-crawling RPG. (Sep 30 in U.S.)
• SGC – Short Games Collection #1 — A curated bundle of five ‘short videogame experiences’.
• Takorita Meets Fries — Underwater princess discoveries fast food in this visual novel adventure.
