Genki’s Switch 2 Gamble at Vegas

Hey, hope you're doing well. It's been a fairly crazy one this week, with a stack of Switch 2 chatter. Let's get into all of that and more, with your Nintendo digest for the week that was.

So, CES took place in Las Vegas recently, and accessory maker Genki were fairly vocal about having future Switch 2 products to show, and hardware details to share directly on the show floor. The interesting tidbit here was their claim of having first-hand knowledge about the upcoming new Nintendo hardware — going so far to have a model/mock-up of the Switch 2 machine at their booth. Since then, the company have somewhat walked back comments on having any such first-hand experience with the Switch sequel, and have revised their claims to now stating that they only know about the hardware from other leaks. There's even been some suggestions that Nintendo reps paid Genki a visit during the Vegas show.

Whatever happened, the Genki CEO did share some potential details about the upcoming hardware, suggesting that yes the Joy-Con are magnetic, and that the controller may even be usable as a mouse of some form — which is an exciting prospect. This, along with other recent leaks and information coming to light, has even resulted in Nintendo issuing a comment to the Japanese press, stressing that nothing we've seen so far is "official".

Official or not (and as I noted here, it's interesting to see Nintendo make any sort of comment on leaks), it's clear we are now very close to the reveal. Plenty think it will happen next week, others suggest we will see news once Trump is in office (due to his possible tariff changes and the price implications of such policies for the Nintendo hardware in US markets). I think all these leaks, despite them taking the shine off any official announcement, also go some way to help set expectations.
