#156: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending November 17.
|
Welcome to Galar.
Hi , issue #156 of Switch Weekly here, with this week’s Nintendo roundup. Sword & Shield are here , and I’ve been going back and forth over how I wanted to talk about it in this week’s issue. I know there are a number of fans with some fair criticisms to lodge at these new entries, but for all the genuine concerns there’s been an overwhelming amount of unnecessary drama, noise and toxicity surrounding the games. I found it hard to really muster much interest in the commotion — it seems like a lot of unnecessary hoo-ha. The series has been shifting towards an annual release schedule, and this along with the move to 3D / HD developement represents a significant change for the studio, so something had to give. Regardless of all this, the games have been well received for the most part — links to reviews in the issue below. (Let me know if you have any thoughts to share about all of this – just hit reply.) Anyway, beyond Pokemon it’s a bit of quite week, with no particularly big news, or big games hitting the eshop. As an aside, I’ve been working on a redesign of the Switch Weekly website, which I hope I can share with you in the next week or two!
Thanks for reading,
P.S. — Happy Birthday to Shigeru Miyamoto for yesterday! REVIEW Pokemon Sword and Shield — Despite all the grumblings and drama that surrounded these games pre-launch, the majority of the reviews are very positive. Casey DeFreitas writing at IGN said: “the 40-plus hours I’ve spent with Sword and Shield have left me comfortable with calling them the best Pokemon games I have ever played – and I’ve played ‘em all” . Most critics seem to be happy , with the general takeway being that these games do away with some of the more unwieldy elements whilst keeping the most important bits intact. Here’s a more mixed review from VG247 that calls on some seemingly ‘unfinished’ elements in the game. Casey DeFreitas // IGN ▶ Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield – Switch’s next-gen Pokémon doesn’t quite deliver — This 20-minute video is the usual in-depth technical analysis from Digital Foundry, digging into Game Freak’s full use of the Switch hardware. They say ” there’s a lot that doesn’t quite hit the mark “. Digital Foundry // YouTube REVIEW The Stretchers — An ” enjoyable romp ” that plays best in co-op. Daan Koopman // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Garfield Kart Furious Racing — “We always knew Garfield was something of a rebel, but taking a bad six-year-old game, making it even worse to play, pretending it’s a sequel and charging Switch owners more than double the price to suffer it is some pretty subversive stuff.” Chris Scullion // Nintendo Life REVIEW Sparklite — ” A 2D Zelda Roguelike that comes up short of greatness “. David Lloyd // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Asdivine Kamura — ” a solid take on a well established formula “. Ben Alder // Ladies Gamers REVIEW WRC 8 FIA World Rally Championship PJ O’Reilly // Nintendo Life ▶ Play every PS4 game on Nintendo Switch — This requires putting Android on your Switch, so isn’t for everyone, but it’s an interesting experiment all the same.
