#155: Your Nintendo Update
Your Nintendo digest for the week ending November 10.

Not quite a podium finish.
Hey , here’s issue #155 of Switch Weekly, with this week’s Nintendo roundup. This week saw the arrival of the latest Mario & Sonic Olympics game, and despite me marking this as one to watch in last week’s issue I’m surprised to see the review scores for it vary wildly. I’ve linked up one of the more scathing reviews in the issue below, but you can find more takes on it over on the Metacritic page for it . Now, the big hitter coming out next week is of course Pokemon. Sword and Shield arrive on Friday and they look great. As a resident of the UK, to see them leaning in on the Brit-inspired region setting is awesome. Sadly though it seems the games have leaked ahead of launch ( no spoilers at that link ). This has naturally resulted in a lot of information on the game being out in the open ahead of Friday. For Pokemon developers Game Freak this is yet another frustration (Dexit being another) for them to have to deal with — morale is said to be low at the studio. On the plus side however, fans have been showing their support for the developers with an outpouring of love and support. Which version will you be getting? Anyway, Pokemon is joined by over 20 other games on the eShop this week . There’s plenty to dig into, so I’ll let you get cracking.
Thanks for reading,
REVIEW Mario and Sonic 2020 is let down by clumsy gameplay — I’m a little surprised to the see the reaction to this one. Most of the previews earlier in the year seemed really positive (particularly to the 2D retro sections), but a good number of the final reviews say this latest Olympics outing is lacking in the usual polish that this union of gaming giants usually delivers. Vikki Blake // VGC Nintendo boss Bowser on Switch Lite sales, 3DS support, and tiny retro consoles — A quick interview with Nintendo of America head-honcho Doug Bowser. The key takeway here for me ( paraphrased ): Don’t hold your breath for an N64 mini any time soon as delivering retro games via the Switch is the preferred option going forward. Andrew Webster // The Verge ▶ Mr. Sakurai presents “Terry Bogard” for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — Here’s a really thorough run-down of the latest Smash DLC character, the SNK fighter and all round good boy Terry. ( Side note: I’m not sure why, but it’s very amusing to me the amount of ‘regular’ named blokes we’ve got in Smash now: Terry, Ken, Simon, etc. ) Nintendo // YouTube REVIEW New Super Lucky’s Tale — A review from yours truly. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. This cutesy platformer came out on Friday, and I had a ton of fun with it. It’s of a similar pedigree to the classic 3D platformers of the late 90s. I’d say if your shopping for a younger Switch owner, this would be a great addition to many a Christmas list. Zion Grassl has a superb behind the scenes video of how this Switch version came about. Chris Brandrick // Switch Weekly Nintendo just dropped a physics-based co-op game from the developers of Little Nightmares — This came out of nowhere, and I haven’t really had chance to give it a good look yet, but this description sounds good to me: “looks like a mix between a chaotic driving game like Crazy Taxi or The Simpsons: Hit & Run with a strong dash of Overcooked-esque co-op calamity” . Mathew Olson // US Gamer REVIEW Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires’ Conspiracy — “If you like past games in the series, you will probably still enjoy this more laid back entry, but first timers would be better off starting from the beginning.” Joe DeVader // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Disney Tsum Tsum Festival — “..is hyperactive at all times. It partially adds to the excitement of playing, but also comes with a ton of other issues.” Chris Carter // Destuctoid REVIEW Just Dance 2020 — This series has been around for a decade, huh. Ryan Craddock // Nintendo Life REVIEW House of Golf Thumb Culture ▶ Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield – Overview trailer — As I mentioned in my opening intro this week, the next entries in the Pokemon series are now just days away. Here’s a good round-up of new features and things you can do in the games. Nintendo UK // YouTube ▶ Nintendo Switch’s biggest failure — Sure, the title is a little clickbaity, but Kevin raises some good points about the Joy Cons and how Nintendo have missed some obvious(?) opportunities with the controller concept in general. I’d like to be wrong, but I’d say with the Switch Lite now being a thing , the chances of Nintendo making alternative Joy Cons have diminished somewhat. Kevin Kenson // YouTube Five Nights at Freddy’s and its first two sequels are coming to Switch Jordan Gerblick // GamesRadar How to customize the look of your Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers Cameron Faulkner // The Verge
